Old bio: Reconciling geophysical and geochemical observations is an important objective in volcanology that will allow us to have a better understanding of how volcanoes work. My research involves trying to understand the residence times of magma in the crust and the timescales of magma mixing and ascent prior to eruption. By examining how compositional changes in magmatic crystals are smoothed out by diffusion over time, we can place geochemical observations about the magma-plumbing system into a temporal framework. I am currently studying examples in Iceland in an effort to understand how magma composition, storage depth and physical properties can influence these timescales, which in turn inform us about how magma migrates throughout the Icelandic crust.
