Giuseppe Salerno is a volcanologist at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Mt. Etna Observatory, where he currently serves as Head of Volcanology. His research focuses on magmatic degassing and the multiparametric integration of data to investigate eruptive mechanisms and processes, with the aim of improving eruption forecasting. He also investigates how volcanic gas emissions interact with and influence climate. Giuseppe has extensive experience in remote sensing of volcanic gas emissions, particularly in the observation and inversion of volcanic plume data.
His primary research is centered on Mt. Etna, Stromboli, and Vulcano (Italy), but his work has also included collaborations with observatories and universities in South America, Iceland, the United States, and Antarctica. He previously completed his PhD with Prof. Clive Oppenheimer.
