John Smellie

John Smellie is now an honorary departmental professor at the University of Leicester, after working as a senior volcanologist at the British Antarctic Survey.

John Smellie’s research focuses on lithofacies, edifice construction and eruptive characteristics of glaciovolcanism in Antarctica and Iceland and application to deriving critical parameters of past ice sheets. Using information from volcanic sequences to reconstruct past landscapes and environmental history.

Working on: Numerous Miocene & Pliocene volcanoes throughout Antarctica; Various Icelandic volcanoes
